Is a wooden chopping board hygienic?

Board Butter
Every chopping board purchase comes with a pot of board butter. Sparingly applying this once a week will help keep your board in great condition. As well as this, the board butter will help with odour prevention and water resistance. If you treat your chopping board regularly with love, attention and oil or butter, your board will have a long and happy life.
People believe wooden chopping boards are unhygienic, this is not true. When you cut, small grooves can appear across the board and bacteria can collect here. The difference with a plastic chopping board is that the plastic will partly close around the grooves and store the bacteria/dirt inside. Therefore when you wash a plastic board is not guaranteed that you will wash all the bacteria from the grooves. A wooden chopping board does not close around the dirt but will open during cleaning. This way you'll be sure to wash out all of the bacteria. In addition to this, the tannin in the wood helps by killing a big part of the bacteria.
How to wash your board
When you have finished using your board it is best to rinse it and wipe it with a cloth or sponge. You don't always need to use washing up liquid however it is advised if you after cutting raw meat, poultry or fish. Do not submerge the board in water or put it in a dishwasher. It is also best to avoid leaving the board in direct sunlight as this will distort the colour.
